... survival at 8,000ft altitude in New Mexico
6 Attachment(s)
My next destination.... Just finished the phone interview: I should be there by the 2nd week of february. I hope it is going to be a spot where I can stay until after dec 2012. just in case Mayans were right.
Again the owner is very wealthy and his goal is to turn the place into a relaxation haven where ppl can come to fish, live in tepees, horse back riding, eat organically etc... so there is lots of construction, gardening and animal husbandry. They are fully solar energy self-sufficient and have their own water wells. |

Going to be cold. 8,000 feet in February. Beautiful place, but I would go in the summer time.

Re: ... survival at 8,000ft altitude in New Mexico
ps: right now there is 2 feet snow but the after feb 15, temps go up again... after all it is near the mexican border (silver city) ... but from end of march til october its in the upper 80s in the day and 60s at night. From nov thru feb its freezing at night and very cold during the day, they do not always have much snow like this year.

Keep in mind the increased exposure to UV up there, especially since you won't be a visitor.
Is there a gain in efficiency for photovoltaics at that altitude? |

Re: ... survival at 8,000ft altitude in New Mexico
Goldissima,
I am soooo jealous. SW New Mexico is a hidden gem. I spent a lot of time in the Reserve, NM - Alpine, AZ area many years ago. The Mogollon Mountains are some of the most beautiful "undiscovered" scenery in the country, with very few people around. Congrats and best of luck and happiness to you.:23_28_100s: |

Just moved to Santa Fe from hellish Palm Beach County, Florida.
I absolutely love it here in this state. Been hiking a lot. Lately been gearing up for a winter overnighter....Life is good in the land of Enchantment..... |

Re: ... survival at 8,000ft altitude in New Mexico
30 - 60 days to get your lungs used to altitude.
During that time, as was said above, know the symptons of altitude sickness and be very wary. After that time, you can still get altitude sick, but it's not nearly as likely. Congrats G. Hopefully you can keep a running commentary, maybe start one thread and one of the mods can put it up top (sticky?) so we can check in on you and how you like the area. DON'T GO TOO HARD the first couple of months. You'll do fine. |
